Jerry Mathwig (skip) and Anna Witt (lead) emerged as winners of the Potlicker Cup, an annual lawn bowls event held in Milwaukee. Competing in a seven-team round robin tournament over two days, Mathwig and Witt took 1st place with a record of 5-1 (+20), ahead of Bob Scheidner and Rob Behncke (4-2, +26), and Steve Nelson and Paul Legwinski (4-2, +13).Mathwig and Witt's play throughout the weekend was steady and consistent, and well deserving of the title. The Potlicker attracted three newer bowlers to tournament play - Behncke (3rd year), Legwinski (2nd year), and first year bowler Brendan Churchill. Also competing were pairs teams Leif Andresen and Jim Grzybowski, Joe Zinna and Ken Degenhardt, John Kirkwood and Churchill, and Jim Cavender and Max Cavender.
According to the Word Detector, a "potlicker" is a personal insult dating back to the 1830s, meaning a low and contemptible person, one with no pride and no principles. In its literal and original sense, “pot licker” was not a person at all but a mongrel dog, most often a nondescript hound mix, no good for hunting and generally considered worthless. In Milwaukee a "potlicker" is a term used in good humor to poke a little fun at another bowler who annoys you, as in someone who wicks in from 8 feet out for shot..."you potlicker, you!"
