Aussie transplant debuts as winner at Central Open Pairs
Playing in his first USLBA sanctioned tournament,Scott Angelo from Brisbane Australia, and now residing in Manitowoc WI, teamed up with skip Steve Nelson (Chicago) to capture the Central Division Open Pairs lawn bowls tournament held June 26-27 in Milwaukee. Persistent rain had softened the greens that were running 11.5 seconds. Angelo, who is more accustomed to greens at 15-16 seconds, was seen on many occasions to be 'windmilling' his arm prior to delivery to compensate for the extra weight required to reach the head. Nelson and Angelo successfully employed the strategy of keeping the mat and playing from the hog line to the six foot mark, in order to play into Angelo's wheelhouse. The strong field included 2nd place finishers skip Bob Schneider (River Hills WI) and Joe Zinna (Rockton IL), and 3rd place skip Leif Andresen (Waukesha WI) and Jim Gryzbowski (Glendale WI). It was good to see a team from Chicago Lakeside who were represented by Michael Vandeboncoeur and Ken Koenig. All other bowlers in the 7 team field are members of Milwaukee Lake Park.
